* Rename `ActionView::Base#run` to `#_run`Seb Jacobs2019-03-151-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There was a recent change by @tenderlove to Action view which introduced `ActionView::Base#run` [1]. We ran into an issue with our application because one of the core concepts in our domain model is a `Run` which is exposed in most of our views as a helper method, which now conflicts with this new method. Although this is a public method it is not really meant to be part of the public API. In order to discourage public use of this method and to reduce the chances of this method conflicting with helper methods we can prefix this method with an underscore, renaming this method to `_run`. * Pass the template format to the digestorAaron Patterson2019-02-151-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This commit passes the template format to the digestor in order to come up with a key. Before this commit, the digestor would depend on the side effect of the template renderer setting the rendered_format on the lookup context. I would like to remove that mutation, so I've changed this to pass the template format in to the digestor. I've introduced a new instance variable that will be alive during a template render. When the template is being rendered, it pushes the current template on to a stack, setting `@current_template` to the template currently being rendered. When the cache helper asks the digestor for a key, it uses the format of the template currently on the stack.
* Turn lookup context in to a stack, push and pop if formats changeAaron Patterson2019-02-111-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | This commit keeps a stack of lookup contexts on the ActionView::Base instance. If a format is passed to render, we instantiate a new lookup context and push it on the stack, that way any child calls to "render" will use the same format information as the parent. This also isolates "sibling" calls to render (multiple calls to render in the same template). Fixes #35222 #34138
* Pass source to template handler and deprecate old style handlerAaron Patterson2019-02-014-10/+10
| | | | | | | | | This commit passes the mutated source to the template handler as a parameter and deprecates the old handlers. Old handlers required that templates contain a reference to mutated source code, but we would like to make template objects "read only". This change lets the template remain "read only" while still giving template handlers access to the source code after mutations.
* Tighten up the AV::Base constructorAaron Patterson2019-01-291-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The AV::Base constructor was too complicated, and this commit tightens up the parameters it will take. At runtime, AV::Base is most commonly constructed here: https://github.com/rails/rails/blob/94d54fa4ab641a0ddeb173409cb41cc5becc02a9/actionview/lib/action_view/rendering.rb#L72-L74 This provides an AV::Renderer instance, a hash of assignments, and a controller instance. Since this is the common case for construction, we should remove logic from the constructor that handles other cases. This commit introduces special constructors for those other cases. Interestingly, most code paths that construct AV::Base "strangely" are tests.
* Pull buffer assignment upAaron Patterson2019-01-161-1/+1
| | | | | Since everything goes through a `run` method, we can pull the buffer assignment up.
* Always evaluate views against an ActionView::BaseAaron Patterson2019-01-161-4/+6
| | | | | Methods created by views should always be evaluated against an AV::Base instance. This way we can extract and refactor things in to classes.
* Pull output buffer conditional upAaron Patterson2019-01-161-1/+3
| | | | | | This pulls the "output buffer existence" conditional up. Instead of evaling the same conditional over and over, we can pull it in to "only compiled once" Ruby code.

* Fix inherit from deprecated `ActionView::Template::Handlers::Erubis`Fumiaki MATSUSHIMA2017-02-012-1/+10
| | | | | | | | | | There are some classes inherit from `ActionView::Template::Handlers::Erubis`. (ex. https://github.com/haml/haml/blob/4.0.7/lib/haml/helpers/safe_erubis_template.rb#L3) ``` Class.new(ActionView::Template::Handlers::Erubis) # => TypeError: superclass must be a Class (ActiveSupport::Deprecation::DeprecatedConstantProxy given) ```
* Change ActionView ERB Handler from Erubis to ErubiJeremy Evans2017-01-253-72/+166
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Erubi offers the following advantages for Rails: * Works with ruby's --enable-frozen-string-literal option * Has 88% smaller memory footprint * Does no freedom patching (Erubis adds a method to Kernel) * Has simpler internals (1 file, <150 lines of code) * Has an open development model (Erubis doesn't have a public source control repository or bug tracker) * Is not dead (Erubis hasn't been updated since 2011) Erubi is a simplified fork of Erubis that contains just the parts that are generally needed (which includes the parts that Rails uses). The only intentional difference in behavior is that it does not include support for <%=== tags for debug output. That could be added to the ActionView ERB handler if it is desired. The Erubis template handler remains in a deprecated state so that code that accesses it directly does not break. It can be removed after Rails 5.1.

* Change the raw template handler to render html-safe stringseileencodes2016-06-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In PR #24929 the changelog was updated to make note that while the new template handler was changed to raw this changed the behavior when outputting plain html or js files. Previously ERB would output the files unescaped. Changing the default handler to RAW meant that these same files would be rendered as escaped rather than as js or html. Because of this change in behavior and after the discussion #24949 in we decided to change the behavior of the Raw handler to output html_safe strings by default. Now files rendered with the default handler (raw) render the file unescaped.
* Make collection caching explicit.Kasper Timm Hansen2016-02-201-25/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | Having collection caching that wraps templates and automatically tries to infer if they are cachable proved to be too much of a hassle. We'd rather have it be something you explicitly turn on. This removes much of the code and docs to explain the previous automatic behavior. This change also removes scoped cache keys and passing cache_options.

* Add Html template handler that wraps Raw output in an OutputBufferSantiago Pastorino2016-01-051-0/+9
| | | | | | | This fixes the case when you try to render an html you know safe and the file is named something.html. With this commit the content of the html won't be escaped anymore because AV won't use Raw handler and choose Html handler instead.
* Support explicit defintion of resouce name for collection caching.Dov Murik2015-07-071-2/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | If a template includes `# Template Collection: ...` anywhere in its source, that name will be used as the cache name for the partial that is rendered for the collection. This allows users to enable collection caching even if the template doesn't start with `<% cache ... do %>`. Moreover, the `# Template Collection: ...` notation is recognized in all template types (and template types other than ERB can define a resource_cache_call_pattern method to allow the `cache ... do` pattern to be recognized too).
* Improve detection of partial templates eligible for collection caching.Dov Murik2015-06-221-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | The regular expression which was used to detect partial templates that begin with a `<% cache ... do %>` call missed some cases. This commits attempts to improve the detection for some cases such as multi-line comments at the beginning of the template. The different templates are listed in two new unit test methods. Note that specially crafted Ruby code can still evade such `cache`-call detection: for example, a user might have its own method which itself calls the Rails `cache` helper. In such a case, the template's code doesn't start with a literal `cache` string and therefore will not be eligible for collection caching.

* Prefer string patterns for gsubbrainopia2015-04-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/579 - there is a new optimization since ruby 2.2 Previously regexp patterns were faster (since a string was converted to regexp underneath anyway). But now string patterns are faster and better reflect the purpose. Benchmark.ips do |bm| bm.report('regexp') { 'this is ::a random string'.gsub(/::/, '/') } bm.report('string') { 'this is ::a random string'.gsub('::', '/') } bm.compare! end # string: 753724.4 i/s # regexp: 501443.1 i/s - 1.50x slower
* Collections automatically cache and fetch partials.Kasper Timm Hansen2015-02-211-0/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Collections can take advantage of `multi_read` if they render one template and their partials begin with a cache call. The cache call must correspond to either what the collections elements are rendered as, or match the inferred name of the partial. So with a notifications/_notification.html.erb template like: ```ruby <% cache notification %> <%# ... %> <% end %> ``` A collection would be able to use `multi_read` if rendered like: ```ruby <%= render @notifications %> <%= render partial: 'notifications/notification', collection: @notifications, as: :notification %> ```
